Treatment - Non Surgical

The primary treatment for most throwing shoulder problems is physical therapy for stretching and strengthening of different parts of the shoulder. A period of rest and anti-inflammatory medication is usually prescribed, followed by a throwing mechanics program and stretches. Rotator cuff and shoulder girdle muscle strengthening exercises follow. Then, when the shoulder is strong and balanced, the interval throwing program is begun. Depending on the exact nature of the problem, non-surgical treatment is usually successful, but normally involves no more pitching for the current season. Most throwers are able to return the following season. Lack of progress with non-surgical treatment can be a reason to proceed with surgical treatment. That decision is made in time to still allow return to play the following season, even if surgery is needed.
